Benita Jeane Archer Baylor, age 94, surrounded by her family, passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2021. Jeane was born March 3, 1927, in Akron, Ohio to parents Jack E and Isa (Mary) Smith Archer. Jeane grew up in Randolph, Ohio, graduating from Randolph High School in 1945. She was the only family member to attend college, graduating with a BSN degree from Mount Union College in 1948 and from Saint Lukes School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio as an RN in 1951. She was a member of the Tri Delta sorority while at Mount Union. Jeane then went to work at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna, Ohio from 1951-56, subsequently becoming the office manager and nurse for A.J. Silbiger, M.D. in Atwater, Ohio from 1956 to 1973.
Jeane met the love of her life, Charles French Baylor during high school, and attended together a Methodist Church summer camp at Lakeside, Ohio. Jeane and Charles were married 11 June 1948 after Charles finished his WWII service, neither one of them employed. Jeane and Charles began their life together based upon a faith in God and each other, which served them well throughout their lives. Their family with children Victoria Shreve and Richard C., resided in Atwater, Ohio until the promise of improved employment for Charles occurred in 1966 and they moved to Alliance, Ohio. Jeane was active in various organizations such as The United Methodist Church, UM Women, Lydia Circle, both in Alliance and Atwater. She was also a member of the Tri Delta Sorority Alumni Chapter, Alliance Country Club, Tennysonians, Alliance Women’s Club. Another employment opportunity took the family to Canton, Ohio when Charles became the CEO and Chairman of First Federal Savings and Loan of Canton, Ohio in 1975. Jeane was again active in her new church, Faith United Methodist, in North Canton and a member of the Brookside Country Club and the Questors Timekeepers Chapter in Canton.
Jeane’s interests were travel, music, herb gardening, reading, babysitting grandchildren, and antique collecting (we have over 100 salt cellars to prove it!). She thoroughly enjoyed writing letters to friends and family, and began a Pen Pal writing relationship with a lady in London, England in 1946, continuing to present day with that lady’s daughter.
She was a great lady, friend, worlds best mother, grandmother and great grandmother and is remembered well by all who knew her. We will all recall her sharp wit and spunky attitude. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 62 years Charles F. Baylor in 2010, sister Ada Ruth Archer Miller Beeler, and brother William (Bill) Archer. Jeane is survived by her daughter Victoria Baylor Weida (Stan Bassak) of Uniontown, Ohio and her children Katherine Koch Bauer of Columbus, Ohio and Robert C. Koch of Alliance, Ohio. Jeane is also survived by her son Richard C. (Maura) Baylor and their children; Jennifer Jeane (Eric) Biddle, Katie Marie (Mark) Tornow, Anna Isabelle Baylor, Charles Richard Baylor, seven great grandchildren, all of whom reside in Columbus, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.
We are grateful to past neighbors and friends, Ed and Barb Kolp and Mike and Pam Cullen, for continuing their kind friendship and visitations with our mother that she very much enjoyed. And particularly loving gratitude to our lifelong friends Paul and Ethel Hall for their friendship and constant assistance to our family all our lives. Mom recalls always with pleasure, catching the biggest steelhead on Lake Michigan with Paul, Ethel and Dad and then having a great feast for all. Thanks as well to all the kind folks at Aultman Hospice, Danbury and the Sanctuary Grande for attending to her daily needs and providing great care to mom and hospitality for all visitors.
We’ll all miss her dearly and every day.
