Maurice "Moe" Leask

Maurice James Leask, age 95, of Alliance, formerly of Deerfield passed away at 5 a.m., Monday, April 6, 2020 at Altercare of Alliance.

He was born June 22, 1924, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to Fred and Sadie (Welsby) Leask.

Moe attended Simcoe High School in Canada and was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

While living in Simcoe, he worked for his father who had a farm and who owned a motel and restaurant.

He met the love of his life, Grace, and they married on April 6, 1946 and moved to South Porcupine and he worked at the Dome Gold Mine. Their firstborn children, Bob and Carol, were born in Canada and they moved to the United States in 1950 and had their other children, Janet and John.

Moe worked at Standard Steel making car bumpers and ran a hammer at Transue and Williams Forge. He then moved into carpentry and construction work with Art Mauck, then Barcus Construction for many years. He and his son, John started Leask Construction in 1975 where he worked with him until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of the Deerfield United Methodist Church, and very active in Deerfield Ruritans, Lads and Lassies and Alliance Senior Center. He loved bowling, golfing, fishing, feeding the birds and playing cards. He had a big love of splitting firewood and burning it in his fireplace.

Survivors include his sons, Robert (Becky) Leask and John (Marty) Leask, both of Deerfield; daughters, Carolyn (Mike) Salamon of Ravenna and Janet (Woody) Booth of Virginia; 10 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by his wife, Grace (Pirie) Leask who died in 2015; sister, Yvonne Manypenny and a brother, Jack.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be at Deerfield Cemetery.
