Julia Anne Dawson (née Temple), 100, of Stark County, passed away peacefully, with her family in the room, on August 31, 2025.
Born on February 26, 1925, in Alliance, Ohio, Julia was the daughter of Ben and Mary Temple. She graduated from Alliance High School in 1943 and went on to attend Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism on a full academic scholarship. While at Northwestern, she was a proud member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and graduated with the class of 1947.
After World War II, Julia married her beloved husband, Navy veteran Jack Dawson on January 1, 1948. The couple began their married life in Chicago, where Julia launched her journalism career as a feature writer for This Week in Chicago while Jack completed his degree at Northwestern. Upon returning to Stark County, she continued her professional work as a beat writer and a contributor to the Sunday women’s section for the Canton Repository. Julia also played an important role in encouraging education within her family, albeit tutoring Jack’s younger siblings, she remained a skilled editor for future generations spawning strong writers.
Throughout their lives, Julia and Jack made their homes in Detroit and Pittsburgh, where Julia taught high school English before retiring back to Stark County in 1989. Julia was an avid reader and seamstress. She was a competitive bridge player at The Alliance Women’s Club, where she cherished friendships and community involvement for many years. She lived out her longest career as a minister’s wife and held a long standing membership of the Presbyterian Church USA.
Julia is survived by her daughter, Karen Bradley of Canton; her grandchildren, Kevin (Chantal) Bradley of North Canton, Benjamin (Dr. Kayron) Bradley of Kansas City, and Elizabeth (Brian) Lindenbaum of Canton; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to her family, her bright mind, sharp wit, and her ability to always be there when she was needed most.
A visitation will be held at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home on Monday, September 8th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, September 9th at 10:00 a.m.
