John F. Peters, age 96, of Alliance, passed away at his home at 1:16 a.m. Sunday, November 28, 2021.

He was born March 12, 1925 in Salem, Ohio to Frank J. and Anna (Baka) Peters.

A lifelong resident of Alliance, Jack graduated from Alliance High School in 1943, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Finance in 1947.  After graduation, he worked some with his father in a local restaurant, developing food services catering and industrial cafeterias until he joined Butler Wick & Co. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Mr. Peters was a retired Senior Vice President for Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Inc. (formerly Butler Wick & Co.). Shortly after graduating, he was hired at the investment banking firm, Butler Wick & Co. In the early 1970's, Mr. Peters was an adjunct professor at the University of Mount Union in the Department of Economics, Accounting & Business Administration.

In 1998, Jack co-founded The Greater Alliance Foundation, which provides individuals and other entities interested in the quality of life in the Alliance area the opportunity to direct their charitable giving toward identifiable and worthy needs that sometimes go unmet by the established charitable resources.

Nominated by his peers and selected by a panel of industry experts, Mr. Peters was inducted into the national Broker Hall of Fame in 1997. He was a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers.

Jack has been recognized for his contributions to the community, most notable, his involvement with Alliance Community Hospital, the Alliance Family YMCA, The United Way and the Alliance Area Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Peters has served on the Mount Union's Board of Trustees since 1987 and is past trustee for Rodman Public Library.  In 1995, Mr. Peters was the recipient of the Mount Union's McKinley Fellow Award. This award honors a small, select group of individuals who have had a significant impact on Mount Union as non-alumni.

At Mount Union, Jack has endowed the Madge Patterson Peters Scholarship benefiting Alliance High School students attending Mount Union. In December 2010, in honor of Mr. Peter's lifetime achievements, his colleagues at Stifel Nicolaus and Company, Inc. named for him a 25-foot stock ticker display within the Engineering and Business Building at the University of Mount Union. Most notably, he established the Dowling Mentor Program to enhance the lives of young people in the Alliance area. Mr. Peters was also awarded an honorary degree at the University of Mount Union's Commencement Ceremony in May 2011.

He was instrumental in founding the Robert T. White School of Nursing, the Early Childhood Educational Alliance and just recently, the Summer Explorers program.

Jack and his wife, Madge have been recognized with the Distinguished Service to Youth Award from the Alliance YMCA Board of Directors.  Mr. Peters was named the 2013 Spirit of Enterprise winner during the annual Business Alliance Awards event held October 15, 2013.

Jack and his wife, Madge met at the University of Pennsylvania, and had been married for than 73 years.

He will be forever remembered, loved and missed by his family, his wife, Madge (Patterson) Peters, whom he married May 15, 1948; his children, Suzanne Peters Clark, Joan Huffman, and Todd (Mary K.)
