James Gary Johnson, age 70, of Alliance, signed off the airwaves, at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2012, at Alliance Community Hospital.
He was born April 13, 1942, in Coshocton, Ohio, to the late Harold and Mabel (Ruch) Johnson and has been an Alliance resident for more than 40 years.
A 1960 graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Jim graduated in 1964 from Bob Jones University receiving his bachelor in communications. He was employed as a radio broadcaster.
Jim was a member of the Alliance Friends Church and formerly of the United States Army National Guard.
He was a member of the Ohio Broadcasters Hall of Fame, received the Ohio Sportscaster of the Year award in 1980, served as Master of Ceremonies for the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony from 1988 to 1998, and was Cleveland Cavs Radio Play-by-Play Sportscaster from 1989-1992. He was also known as the "Voice of Stark County Sports" for more than 30 years while working for WFAH in Alliance and WHBC in Canton.
Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Huth of Alliance: son, Michael Johnson of North Canton; grandson, Noah Johnson; numerous brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Nancy K. (Blake) Johnson, whom he married June 27, 1964 and who died December 8, 2011.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 15, 2012, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Sams officiating. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Alliance City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial Contributions may be made to the Stark County Coaches Association, c/o Ron Rankin, 3332 W. Harvard Blvd. NW, Canton, OH 44709.
