Herbert Atlee Woolf

September 4, 1924 — December 25, 2021

Herbert Atlee Woolf at the young age of 97 was reunited with his parents on December 25, 2021 following his battle with cancer.

He was born in Alliance, OH on September 4, 1924 to Arnold and Maureta (Herbster) Woolf, the second of two children. He resided in the same home he grew up in as a child. His grandfather, Lorenzo and Laura (Yeagley) Woolf, owned the old Ivy Stone farm just down the road and his father, Arnold, lived in the home across the street.

He attended grade school in Homeworth at Union Grove. He graduated from Alliance High School in January of 1943. He worked for Wade-Youman’s Steel/Machine shop in Alliance for several years while attending school and until he enlisted in the Navy in April 1943. While in the Navy during WWII he was a Machinist Second Class. He was in the Mediterranean Sea sub screening for submarines and traveled to Panama, Hawaii and Japan. He returned in April 1946 and went back to work for Wade-Youman’s another 20 some years, then a short time at American Steel and his final 18 years with Monarch Rubber before retiring in 1989.

After returning home from the Navy, he married his first wife, Margaret (Lamey). They had 2 sons, Daniel and David Woolf. He married his second wife, Helen (Leppert) Jones in 1958 and had a daughter, Darlene and two sons, Daryl and Dean. He was also briefly married to his 3rd wife Carol Eells.

Herbert was a man of many talents. He loved using his hands and craftsmanship to build things needed for the house or tinker in the garage. In his later years, he loved working in the yard to keep himself busy as he tried to keep the weeds in his yard at bay. He also enjoyed making frequent visits to Daryl’s Transmission shop next door. He’d tried to lend a hand and enjoyed making conversation when he wasn’t driving his lawn mower through the shop moving everything in his path. He was a man who knew the value of working hard to provide for his family.

Herbert is survived by his sons, Daniel (Lisa) Woolf of Hastings, FL; David Woolf of Hollywood, FL; Daryl (Staci) Woolf of Alliance, OH; Dean (April) Woolf of Alliance, OH; daughter, Darlene Kennedy of Alliance, OH; and grandchildren Jacob Woolf, Sarah (Bronson) Witting, Amanda Woolf, Jamie Lynn (James) Anderson, Jessica (Donald) Jute, Daphney Miller, and Dustin (Erika) Woolf; and six great-grandchildren.

Herbert is preceded in death by his parents and his step mother, Elizabeth (Bandy) Woolf; his sister and brother-in-law Frances and Vallier “Bud” Anderson; his Uncle Levi and Clarence; his Aunt Anna and Arlie; and his first wife Margaret.

Family is having a private memorial to celebrate his life.   Arrangements are entrusted to Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home 75 South Union Ave Alliance, Ohio 44601.
