Florence M. Fiffick, age 84, of Salem, passed away at 5:25 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Crandall Medical Center.
She was born March 26, 1929, in Cuyahoga Falls, to Richard and Leah (Lance) Boyd.
Florence was a 1947 graduate of Atwater High School and was the valedictorian. In 1971 she graduated summa cum laude from Kent State University where she was the class salutatorian and Jennings Scholar.
She taught second grade at Maple Ridge School, retiring in 1992. While teaching at Maple Ridge, she received the Golden Apple Award for excellence in teaching.
A longtime member of the Damascus United Methodist Church, she was active in the Damascus United Methodist Church Women's Group.
Survivors include her husband, Ron Fiffick; sister, Catherine (Leo) Birkheimer of Sandersville, Ga.; son, Ted (Tammy) Bates of Salem; and daughter, Deborah (Gerald) Foster of Denham Springs, La. She also leaves seven grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill Sandrus, Ralph Sandrus, Wendel Boyd, Hugh Boyd, Jack Boyd, Richard Boyd, Jr. and Arlett Boyd; and husband, Frank Bates.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at Damascus United Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Amey officiating. Friends may call Tuesday, January 14, 2014 from 4-8 p.m. with the family present from 6-8 p.m. at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service, at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Youngstown, OH 44512.
