Dorothy E. (Herbst) Matthews, age 77, of Alliance, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Altercare of Alliance.
She was born October 9, 1934, in Muskegon, Michigan, to Henry and Elsa (Aue) Herbst, and resided in the Alliance area for the last 29 years.
Dorothy was a 1953 graduate of Muskegon High School and attended Muskegon Community College. Dorothy worked for Travelers Insurance Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
She was a charter member of the Church of the Covenant in Canton. She was a longtime member of the Petal Pushers Garden Club in North Canton and the Canton Garden Center where she served as treasurer and president. She was active with the Canton Symphony where she volunteered as an usher. She was a Girl Scout Leader in North Canton for many years. She was a member of the organization Votes for Women and a longtime Republican volunteer.
She is survived by her husband, George Matthews of Alliance, whom she married November 26, 1955; son, Jeffrey (Heidi) Matthews and daughter, Sherry Smith, all of North Canton; and grandchildren, Brian Kneeland, Heath Smith, Keely Smith, Emily Matthews and Sarah Matthews.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and a brother, Henry Herbst, Jr.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012, at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home with Pastor Ed Harnish officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Norton Cemetery in Norton Shores, Michigan.
Dorothy's family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, aides and support staff at Aultman Hospital, Aultman Hospice and Altercare of Alliance Center for their love and compassionate care.
Dorothy's family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Aultman Foundation, www.aultmanfoundation.org.
