Donald Edward Rohr

November 30, 1924 — January 22, 2007

Donald E. Rohr, age 82 of Alliance, passed away at 7:42 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22, 2007 at Community Care Center.
He was born Nov 30, 1924 in Canal Fulton, Ohio to Edward Jacob Rohr and Lura Theresa (Smith) Rohr and was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Rohr attended St. Philip & James School in Canal Fulton, graduated from Canal Fulton High School and was a self employed dairy farmer.
A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo, he was also a member of the Stark County Farm Bureau, Grange and was Stark County 'Young Farmer of the Year' in 1957.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Rohr was also the founder and owner of Circle R Farms, which, at its peak, included about 700 acres of pastures, fields and crops. He also developed the modern dairy cow milking system and the modern pole barn. While he did not patent either invention, he gained national attention for his accomplishments, and was interviewed by LIFE Magazine in the 1950s.
Mr. Rohr's interests were quite varied. He enjoyed country music, including Conway Twitty and Willie Nelson, and also, from time to time, listened to Bob Marley and the Wailers. On week-ends, he could be found at his favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse Grill, based in Alliance.
He is survived by his children Roger (Karen) Rohr of East Rochester, Joseph (Sandy) Rohr of Alliance, Barbara Rohr of Alliance, Beverly (Tom) Speiss of Mission Viejo, Ca., Beatrice Hoopes of Alliance, Samuel (Paula) Rohr of Louisville and Edward Rohr of Alliance; two sisters, Alma Richmond of East Sparta and Rosella Glover of Lamesa, Ca.; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife of 50 years, Mary Jane (Luke) Rohr whom he married Aug. 16, 1945 and who passed away July 2, 1996 and son-in-law, Gary Hoopes.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo with Father Tom Ungashick as celebrant. Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Cassaday-Turkle-Christian Funeral Home, and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park.
