Merriel R. (Merle) Burkhead, age 91 of Sebring, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring.
He was born November 23, 1925 in Rayland, Ohio to Harold Raymond and Lois Darrah (Kugler) Burkhead.
Pastor Burkhead graduated from Cleveland Bible College (now Malone), Kent State and the Oberlin School of Theology.
He served as Pastor at Shalersville Methodist Church from 1954-1962, as Associate Pastor from 1962-1969 at Cuyahoga Falls First United Methodist Church, as Pastor at Dalton United Methodist Church from 1969-1975, Bellview First United Methodist Church from 1975-1982, Barberton Johnson United Methodist Church 1982-1988, before retiring to his cottage at Leesville Lake.
Pastor Burkhead and his wife moved to Copeland Oaks in 2007, and was currently a member at Union Avenue United Methodist Church.
Merriel was a U.S. Army WWII veteran, and was the recipient of two bronze stars and WWII Occupation Medal for his tour of duty in Germany.
A member of the Ham Radio organization, he was very mechanically inclined and his craftsman skills were often referred to by others as having been "built by the hands of the master".
He will be loved and missed by his family, including his wife, Dorrine R. (Martin) Burkhead, daughter, Regina Englehart of Dublin, Ohio; grandsons, Tyler Englehart and Nick Englehart, great-granddaughter, Camri Bartlett; sisters, Martha Brown and Janet Oakes, brother, William (Gail) Burkhead, sister-in-law, Audrey Owens, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Carl Ronald Burkhead and Harold Loye Burkhead, and sister, Vivian Meeker.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 2017 in Bennett Chapel at Copeland Oaks.
Private interment will be at Sebring Grandview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Oaks Foundation at Copeland Oaks, 800 S. 15th St. Sebring, Ohio 44672.
